The Sint-Niklaaskerk: A Phoenix Rising from the Ashes

Westkapelle, a village with a rich history, was shaken in 2013 by a devastating fire that destroyed the Sint-Niklaaskerk. The blaze claimed not only a historic building but also part of its tangible heritage. Yet the stories endured. Now, years later, the church has risen like a phoenix, and a new exhibition brings these tales back to life.

Archaeological Discoveries Reveal the Past

Following the fire, the ground around the church turned out to be a treasure trove of hidden history. Archaeologists from Raakvlak made remarkable discoveries, including 76 skeletons that encapsulate centuries of history. One of these skeletons was sent to KU Leuven for DNA analysis. In the exhibition, you’ll discover who this person was and what the research reveals about the first inhabitants of Westkapelle.

The First Inhabitant of Westkapelle and a Mysterious Reckoning Token

Imagine the first inhabitant of Westkapelle: a person who lived and worked in this area hundreds of years ago. Thanks to archaeological research, we gain a glimpse into their life. Among the findings was a reckoning token, a fascinating object used for calculations in the past. What could it do? You’ll find out in this unique exhibition.

Pastor De Neve: A Fatal Feud

Among the stories presented in the exhibition, that of Pastor De Neve stands out. This clergyman from Westkapelle led a tumultuous life that tragically ended in South America, where an unyielding feud claimed his life. His story, filled with drama and determination, is a vivid part of Westkapelle’s rich history.

A Firefighter and Dramatic Images of the Blaze

The exhibition also features striking images of the 2013 fire, captured by photographer Raoul De Schuyter. These photos vividly portray the drama of that night. Additionally, a firefighter shares his personal experiences, detailing the challenges and emotions of fighting such a destructive blaze.
