In winter, numerous birds find shelter in the Zwin. The area is of great importance for many waterbird species, to which hundreds of geese, ducks and waders migrate from the Far North. The areas where they breed and find abundant food in summer become bleak and nutrient-poor in winter.

While we experience winter as cold, these northern guests thrive in our Zwin! Since early 2019, waterbirds have been enjoying over 100 extra hectares thanks to the Zwin expansion, where they find food and rest.
